Govt support opens new opportunities for Zimbabwean musicians

GOVERNMENT support for the creative sector continues to stimulate growth in Zimbabwe’s music industry, with Beitbridge-based artist Krystal Wamrepa praising the US$10 million facility set aside to support creatives as a major boost for musicians.

The funding, introduced under the Second Republic, is part of broader efforts to professionalise the arts sector and position it as a viable economic contributor rather than a purely entertainment-driven industry.

Krystal Wamrepa, born Fulufhelo Mbedzi, said continued government backing has encouraged artists to remain committed to their craft and pursue sustainable careers in music.

“Let me start by thanking the government by continuing supporting our industry, it really encourages us to keep on pushing in this music industry,” he said.

Wamrepa noted that his VenRap genre has gained acceptance among audiences and opened doors for regional collaborations, reflecting growing recognition of Zimbabwean music beyond the country’s borders.

“In my latest song, Ndidofarelela, I collaborated with one South African artist, Khulufelo, which to me is a sign of growth in my music. My advice to fellow colleagues is on shunning drugs because they affects our career,” he added.

Beyond financial support, the establishment of community radio stations across the country has expanded platforms for emerging and established artists, allowing local music to reach wider audiences.

The initiatives are contributing to the transformation of the music industry into a key driver of cultural expression, youth empowerment and economic participation, particularly for artists based outside major urban centres.
