GOVERNMENT is forging ahead with the empowerment of youths through availing digital devices and information on the dangers of drug and substance abuse.
Two youth empowerment programmes were held in Chinhoyi, Mashonaland West Province this Friday, with government seeking to capacitate and boost the potential of the youth dividend to contribute to national development.
A total of 36 junior parliamentarians from the province received digital devices in the form of tablets are part of government efforts to enhance their oversight duties.
“We want to thank the Second Republic for implementing an inclusive development agenda that also considers young people. These gadgets will facilitate effective communication as we continue to advocate for youth rights,” Junior Minister of State for Mashonaland West Provincial Affairs, Stacy Mapfuti said.
A drug and substance awareness campaign was also held, allowing imprisoned survivors to share their sad stories of being hooked to drugs.
“I am now finishing my degree in prison after I was convicted for stealing at my workplace where I got money to fund my drug addiction.”
The Minister of State for Mashonaland West Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Marian Chombo implored the junior legislators to promote government’s youth empowerment initiatives such as utilisation of vocational training centres and cascade calls against drug and substance abuse.
“The Junior Parliament serves as a training ground for future leaders, nurturing a sense of civic responsibility and encouraging active participation in the democratic process from a young age. In a world increasingly driven by digital connections, we have a unique opportunity to harness these tools to create pathways for better education, health, and livelihoods. Let us also make it our mandate to denounce drug and substance abuse,” she said.
Meanwhile, government is in the process of establishing vocational training centres in each district across the country as part of efforts empower young people with skills in various trades.
