Smallholder wheat farmers in Zaka are thrilled with the government’s support, which has enabled them to start harvesting their wheat crops and prepare for the upcoming summer cropping season.
At the Fuve-Panganai Block B irrigation scheme, 40 hectares of wheat were planted, and some farmers have already begun harvesting their portions using traditional sickles.
The farmers expressed gratitude for the government’s support, citing inputs and technical assistance as key factors in their success
“We are excited that our wheat crop is now ready for harvesting. We received support from the government in the form of inputs and technical support, and as you can see, some of us have started harvesting because we do not want our crops to be disturbed by rain.
“Yes, we appreciate that the government availed combine harvesters for us but remember here everyone has got history her small portion hence it’s easier to harvest using circles,” they said.
The government’s winter wheat initiative is a game-changer for both farmers and the community, providing a safety net against hunger.
Government is also working on bringing new technology to assist smallholder farmers in harvesting their crops.
“I am happy with the crop I am seeing here, it shows that our smallholder farmers are supporting government’s drive of ensuring food security. What we are going to do as government is to bring small combine harvesters for our irrigation schemes such that it’s easier for them to harvest,” said the Deputy Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, Honourable Davis Marapira.
This winter season, the country is targeting 600 000 metric tonnes of wheat and harvesting is now in full throttle with government availing combine harvesters for farmers. The wheat is expected to cushion communities against the current elnino-induced drought.
