THE Public Service Commission, in partnership with the Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, has launched a wellness programme for civil servants in Bindura, aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles and combating non-communicable diseases.
The initiative comes at a time when conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and heart disease continue to pose significant health challenges across the country.
Under the programme, civil servants in Mashonaland Central Province now dedicate every Wednesday afternoon to physical fitness and wellness activities designed to improve their health, wellbeing and productivity.
Provincial Head in the Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Mr Sada Fambi, said government is prioritising wellness as a key component of a healthy and effective public service.
“We are taking the issue of wellness seriously, as declared by the government, as the Ministry of Sports, we advocate and provide technical support.”
Health and fitness experts say regular exercise is one of the most effective ways of preventing and managing chronic illnesses while improving mental health and overall well-being.
“People come for various sports codes, especially for aerobics- Zumba as it reduces chronic diseases,” Bindura University Science and Education Sports Director, Mrs Tsitsi Muzuva said.
Participants have welcomed the initiative, saying it provides an opportunity to stay active, reduce stress and improve their quality of life.
The initiative is expected to play a key role in reducing the burden of non-communicable diseases and creating a healthier and more productive public service.
