THE latest edition of the Battle of Zimbabwe lived up to its billing as arch-rivals Highlanders and Dynamos played out an entertaining 1-1 draw before a packed Barbourfields Stadium on Sunday.
The fiercely contested derby delivered the passion, intensity and drama synonymous with the country’s biggest football rivalry, with both sides creating opportunities in an absorbing encounter.
Highlanders broke the deadlock five minutes before half-time after Mongameli Tshuma was brought down inside the penalty area. Referee Brighton Chimene pointed to the spot and Benjamin Adeogun made no mistake, converting the penalty to give Bosso the advantage.
Dynamos returned for the second half with renewed energy and greater attacking intent, pressing forward in search of an equaliser.
Their persistence was rewarded when Frank Agyemang found the back of the net to level matters and set up a tense closing period.
Both teams pushed for a winning goal in an open and entertaining finale, but neither side could find the breakthrough as the derby ended honours even.
Highlanders head coach Benjani Mwaruwari was satisfied with his side’s effort.
“It is a point gained considering our preparations. The boys gave it their all. It was a good game from both teams.”
Dynamos coach Genesis Mangombe also welcomed the result.
“I will take the point. We did our best, seeing what the opponent wanted to do. They were hungry for success.”
Elsewhere, Hardrock recorded a commanding 4-0 victory over ZPC Kariba at Chahwanda Stadium, while Manica Diamonds and FC Platinum shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw.
At Gibbo Stadium, Chicken Inn ended their winless run with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Triangle United.
