Gokwe community benefits from nutrition gardens

Story by Tafara Chikumira

MUTORA nutritional garden in Gokwe is changing lives for the previously marginalised communities in the region, with members now making a decent living out of the various projects at the site.

The nutritional garden concept, which is part of the government’s Agriculture 8.0 model, has seen the community practising diversified projects on the piece of land they have.

The garden specialises in fisheries and horticultural products as it has solarised boreholes for continuous power supply.

“I am very excited by the project we were given by the government. We are realizing some good returns from the fish we sell here. Our lives have indeed changed for the better.

“I am glad that I can now send my children to school without a hustle. I can also feed them food with high nutritional value from what we get in the garden,” said benefactors of the project.

The government says it will continue to ensure that people in previously marginalised communities get the necessary support in line with the Second Republic’s inclusive development agenda.

“We are very excited that people are receiving these projects with a lot of excitement. The President is on record saying nyika inovakwa nevene vayo and as such we are delighted to see our people walking the talk. We want to see such projects taking the people to the next level,” said Midlands Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Owen Ncube.

The Second Republic is on a massive development trajectory with agriculture expected to lead in the people’s turnaround of fortunes as the country targets to attain an upper middle-income society status by 2030.
