The resort town of Victoria Falls is buzzing with excitement as former Springboks Captain, Siya Kolisi, leads a rugby awareness programme inspiring young minds and fostering love for the game.
Kolisi, the first black captain to lead the Springboks to Rugby World Cup glory, conducted a clinic at Chamabondo Primary School in Mkhosana, a high-density suburb, in Victoria Falls during his holiday in the resort city.
He shared his passion and expertise with aspiring young rugby players, emphasising not only physical skills but the values of teamwork, discipline and perseverance.
“It is a good way for kids to look after themselves and stay on the right path. My presence here shows them that we see them, that people care about them, and that we want them to succeed. Hopefully, this will inspire them to keep playing and remember that I also come from the township, from the same background as them. They must believe in themselves, work hard, and support each other within the community. What has happened this morning has been truly amazing,” said Kolisi.
Programme organisers and beneficiaries expressed their gratitude for the initiative.
“We have been inspired and learned that we need to hold onto our dreams, no matter the obstacles,” said a beneficiary.
“We have been greatly encouraged, we can achieve great things too,” said an inspired fan.
“We have over 50 children here, all inspired and knowing they can also become a Siya. Imagine having a two-time World Champion captain, the current Springboks captain, the Sharks captain, here in Victoria Falls – it will have a significant impact on many people,” said tourism executive, Blessing Munyenyiwa.
The South African rugby star is visiting Victoria Falls for the third time, but this is his first time interacting with the local community.
He also donated goods to those in need in Sizinda, just outside Victoria Falls.
