THE Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has initiated a forensic investigation into the illegal production of kombucha products in collaboration with key stakeholders.
Last week, the ZRP’s Drug and Narcotics Unit arrested a suspected illegal brewer accused of producing kombucha under unapproved conditions.
ZRP National Spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, stated that police have seized samples of the suspected illegal brew and are currently conducting forensic tests with the help of experts.
“Firstly, we want to thank the public for their cooperation in aiding the ZRP in fighting crime across the country. The suspect has already appeared before the court and was remanded in custody until February 25,” he said.
“The ZRP’s forensic department is working tirelessly to ensure that the recovered samples and exhibits are thoroughly analysed by experts who include specialists within the police system as well as collaborators from the Ministry of Health and Child Care.”
Commissioner Nyathi also revealed the ZRP has sent a consignment of confiscated copper cables, seized in Chitungwiza last week, for evaluation to determine their exact value.
Theft of copper cables has become a crippling issue in the country significantly disrupting the country’s ability to supply electricity effectively. The consequences are far-reaching from crippling businesses to leaving homes in the dark.
