False rape claim lands woman in jail

Story by Fungai Jachi, Courts Reporter

19-year-old Linda Feya who filed false rape allegations against her boyfriend, Darlington Muzivachavapo, is regretting her actions after she was sentenced to three months in prison.

With her boyfriend having already spent time in remand prison, Feya confessed that she had lied to fix Muzivachavapo for dumping her.

Feya was subsequently arrested before appearing in another court where she was convicted and sentenced.

A legal expert, Mr Moffat Makuvatsine told the ZBC News that providing false information to the police is a prosecutable offence.

“The offence carries a prison term of six months and there is also an option of a fine. Most people do not realise that knowingly providing false information can land someone in trouble. It’s something that people should know and understand so that they do not end up breaking the law.”

Legal experts also contend that the case stands as a lesson for the citizenry not to take criminal procedures lightly.
