Electric Vehicle revolution gains momentum in Zimbabwe

Story by Owen Mandovha

ZIMBABWE is accelerating efforts to embrace the global electric vehicle (EV) revolution, with growing momentum behind the adoption of clean energy-powered transport as the country pursues sustainable mobility and rural industrialisation.

The push towards green transport took centre stage at an electric vehicle adoption and usage conference held in Harare this Monday, where stakeholders explored opportunities, challenges and policy measures required to drive the transition to electric mobility.

A key focus of the conference was the role of electric vehicles in reducing transport costs and supporting economic activity in rural communities.

Founder of Mobility for Africa, Ms Shanta Bloemen, said electric mobility solutions are already transforming livelihoods and boosting rural development.

“High transport costs are the major issue affecting the development of rural communities, and the use of electric tricycles has become a game-changer in providing low-cost transport solutions. This is proving to be useful in revitalising trade and enhancing rural industrialisation,” Ms Bloemen said.

A group of Kenyan electric vehicle experts, currently on a five-country road tour, stressed the importance of prioritising supportive infrastructure to enable widespread adoption.

“Our experience has been that there is a lack of infrastructure to support the adoption of electric vehicles. Governments need to work on charging stations and reliable power generation to support this revolution,” said Mr James Ngugi from the Road to Africa Expedition.

Local stakeholders also highlighted government efforts to grow the electric vehicle market through policy reforms.

“The reduction of duty on electric vehicles is a step in the right direction and demonstrates the willingness to promote the sector,” said EV expert Mr Tanaka Kutama.

“We have seen an increase in the uptake of EVs, thanks to increased awareness and government policy intervention, which has been effective, though more still needs to be done,” said ZIMOCO Marketing Executive Mr Tafadzwa Nyabuta.

Electric vehicle use in Zimbabwe is steadily growing, supported by government policies, including favourable tax incentives aimed at encouraging green mobility adoption.
