ON the back of ever-increasing divorce cases in the country, senior citizens have encouraged young couples to avoid domestic violence and practice good morals that preserve the marriage institution.
Senior citizens, who attended a Christmas party organised for them in Harare this Tuesday, have deplored domestic violence and encouraged young couples to be hardworking, humble, trustworthy, and respectful.
The message came at a time when there is an increase of divorce cases in the country.
“For us to achieve this long term in our marriage, we were loving to each other, we did not fight in the house hence this long stay,” said an elderly couple.
“We do encourage young couples to complement each other in providing for the family. Couples should be able to live within their means and avoid gossip,” added another.
“Wives must be submissive to their husbands. Above all, husband and wife must not argue or quarrel in the presence of their children. Above all, they should be loving,” an elderly couple said.
The Guest of Honour at the party, Mr Shekie Mushambi said, “We hope that the young generation will take time to ponder on the message brought about by the elderly in our society. Everyone has a role to play in reducing cases of divorce. We do encourage our teachers to be collaborative in dealing with divorce cases in our community. Elders are there to give us guidance and advice on how divorce can be reduced in the country.”
Most elderly people experience health problems such as mental health issues, eyesight problems as well as non-communicable diseases, hence the need for social support to them.
“We always host this event every year so that we can provide them with social support. Our elderly need to be accommodated so that we can help them in different ways. We also have some other programmes lined up for them such as the play therapy, social interaction as well as competition in different ways,” said Happy Day Foundation programme coordinator, Mrs Lingiwe Jairos.
The elderly people had ample time to showcase their talents, especially in singing with the likes of Baba Manyeruke performing on stage.
