A 31-year-old man from Dema under Chief Seke has been sentenced to 20 years in prison by the Chitungwiza Regional Magistrates’ Court after being convicted of raping his four-year-old neighbour earlier this month.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe, the offence occurred on February 8, 2026, after the accused had assisted the victim’s family with moving household property.
Prosecutors said he later lured the child into his rented room while she was playing with other children and committed the offence while they were alone.
“The victim’s mother noticed blood discharges while bathing the child later that evening. Although the child initially provided a different explanation out of fear, she eventually opened up to other adults about the assault,” authorities said.
Members of the community apprehended the suspect and handed him over to the police, leading to his arrest and subsequent court appearance.
The NPAZ urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant and encouraged survivors of sexual offences to report cases promptly so that perpetrators can be brought to justice.
