The Bulawayo community has been challenged to embrace the culture of cleanliness through efficient waste management.
Officiating at the National clean-up campaign programme in Bulawayo this Friday, ZANU PF Vice President and Second Secretary, Cde Kembo Mohadi said that given the gatherings that include Easter, the independence celebrations, and the fourth coming Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF), priority must be given to proper disposal of waste.
He also challenged those who travel, to also play a part in ensuring a clean environment.
“Given the number of gatherings in the month of April which stretch up to the ZITF, there is a need to ensure that waste is properly managed so that Bulawayo remains clean,” said Cde Mohadi.
“This time around we have decided to work with churches given that this month’s programme coincides with the Easter holidays so I implore you to join the government in cleaning our environment,” he said.
Business people in the fast food sub-sector were urged to invest in extended producer responsibility by following up on post-consumer waste.
Cde Mohadi also said, “Gone are the days of maximising profits without taking on board environmental considerations along the value chain for the benefit of the health of the public and environment, furthermore, I implore organisers of big gatherings to also ensure environmental considerations are an integral part of the whole planning process.”
The National Clean-up Day is observed on the first Friday of every month, with all citizens expected to play a part in ensuring a clean environment around them.
