COMMERCIAL livestock farmers in Matabeleland South are investing in massive silage production as the province upscales efforts to contribute to the growth of the national herd.

A sight of a truck-mounted silage cutter on a 120-hectare forage maize field at the Agricultural and Rural Development Authority (ARDA) Antelope Easte in Maphisa, Matobo District, shows a province that is dedicated to boosting its cattle herd after having recovered from severe drought last year.

The estate joins a growing list of commercial farmers in Matabeleland South who have invested millions of dollars in silage production to cushion their cattle from future droughts.

“Due to the drought we experienced last year and with new farmers that have ventured into dairy, we thought we should embark on massive silage production. We are targeting over 160 000 tonnes of silage this year and sell to the community at a very low price,” ARDA Antelope manager, Mr Alick Chinyayi said.

Government has also invested in training and hay bailing equipment to support communal farmers as it endeavours to build resilience against the adverse effects of climate change and boost production.

“As government, this year we are saying let us increase our area under fodder and encourage our farmers to make feed. We are impressed by the ARDA Antelope silage production and it will help our communal farmers who will come to purchase. We have also said all our small-scale farmers should have a portion under fodder,” Agritex Matabeleland South Acting Deputy Director Mr Bhekilizwe Ncube

Earlier this year, government procured more than 3 000 hay bailing tractors to be distributed to the four cattle provinces to enhance efforts to boost livestock production.
