WHILE a lot of attention has been drawn to the country’s Independence Celebrations across the country, Zimbabweans also took time to mark Good Friday which is part of the Easter programme this weekend.
Processions such as the re-enactment of the stations of the cross, in a symbolism of Christ’s journey to Calvary, were a usual sight this Friday morning.
The observances mark the climax of the Holy Week in the Christian calendar.
“During this time, we remember the passing of our lord and saviour Jesus Christ. We started yesterday with the Lord’s Supper mass. This is where Jesus washed the feet of his disciples as a sign of humility as a servant. Today, we remember Jesus’s walk to Calvary, which is why worldwide all Catholics carry a cross as a symbol of Christ’s suffering,” Roman Catholic Church congregant Mrs Maria Jaratina said.
“We just celebrated the Holy Week, where we were journeying with Christ on his way to the cross. Today is the climax of the whole journey of Jesus’ suffering because this is when he was nailed to the cross and Catholics have already started what we call the way of the sorrows or the stations of the cross,” Anglican Church’s Father Alpha John said.
Commemorations will continue through Easter Sunday, with celebrations of Christ’s resurrection.
Easter is not just a holiday for people to be away from work, but an important period for the Christian community to renew themselves in their spiritual journey.
