Catholics celebrate priest’s Golden Jubilee

Story by Mhlomuli Ncube

ONE of the country’s longest serving Roman Catholic priest, Father Charles Mafurutu, has been honoured with a celebratory moment after 50 years in service.

In a family of nine where one member was a nun and one is a priest, the Golden Silver Jubilee was a story of how the journey of faith has progressed in the clergyman’s life.

Many who turned out spoke glowingly of his story.

“This is a man we have known for service and dedication to the church and his nation. We are happy for the life we have shared with Father Mafurutu,” said a congregant.

It was also a reflection of the life of a priest with deep ties to Zimbabwe’s liberation history.

“I was ordained in 1974. For those who know the history of Zimbabwe, I was with the ZIPRA at that time,” Father Mafurutu said.

Vice President; General (Rtd) Dr Constantino Chiwenga who joined in the golden jubilee celebrations, says Father Mafurutu’s service has not only been in church, but in the chaplaincy role with the Zimbabwe Defence Forces.

“The man we are gathered here to celebrate played a pivotal role in the liberation struggle. His work was of great importance.

“You have indeed walked a long and remarkable journey in faith. We appreciate the symbiotic relationship between the government and the church.”

The Catholic Church has played a crucial development role in both pre – and post-independent Zimbabwe.
