GOVERNMENT and school authorities in Buhera district met this Tuesday in Mutare to review the implementation of the Heritage-Based Education curriculum, as they seek to improve Grade seven, Ordinary and Advanced Level results.
The meeting, attended by officials from the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education and 46 primary school heads from Buhera, focused on evaluating learner outcomes, strengthening skills development, and deepening collaboration between schools, families and communities.
School heads examined recent examination results to identify gaps emerging during the transition from the competency-based curriculum to the Heritage-Based Education framework. The curriculum places emphasis on critical thinking, practical skills and the use of locally available resources.
Chapungu Primary School head, Ms Guilt Maramba, said the review provided an opportunity for schools to reflect on their progress since the curriculum’s introduction.
“We are holding this meeting after grade 7, O and A level results. After analysing results, we still have gaps since we are transitioning from the competence based curriculum to the Heritage-Based Education curriculum. We want to close those gaps so that we will have better results in the coming year,” Buhera Schools Inspector, Mr Dongonda noted.
“We believe that if we can create a relationship between or among the schools, the home and the community, we can achieve the desired outcomes of improved and quality education outcomes,” Mr Tirivanhu Mutomba said.
World Vision Education Technical Advisor, Mr Farai Chitombo, highlighted that the Heritage-Based Education curriculum seeks to empower learners by leveraging local resources and encouraging innovation.“The main purpose of our heritage based curriculum is to use the locally available resources and we are developing critical thinking amongst our pupils and teachers. We want them to see that being less privileged does not mean you are limited to local resources.”
In support of improved learning environments, Government and its development partners have constructed more than 50 classroom blocks in Buhera District, strengthening infrastructure and expanding access to education.
