BINGA’s sand beach in Matabeleland North province is drawing increasing attention from local and international tourists, emerging as one of Zimbabwe’s growing leisure destinations.
Tourism statistics indicate that the site received over 2 000 visitors in 2025, up from just over 1 000 the previous year, reflecting a growing appetite among travellers for unique and less-explored attractions.
Visitors praised the tranquil setting and scenic beauty of the sand beach, highlighting its appeal as a destination for relaxation and nature-based experiences.
“I never imagined there would be a sand beach like this in Binga. It is beautiful and very peaceful. The scenery is amazing and the people are welcoming. It is definitely a place I would recommend to others,” a tourist said.
“We came for something different and this place exceeded our expectations, especially the beach and the lake views. It is refreshing to visit somewhere new and untouched. Binga has a lot of potential as a tourist destination,” another stated.
Local tourism operators attribute the rise in visitor numbers to the novelty of the sand beach, river cruises, and cultural experiences, which continue to attract travellers seeking distinctive and authentic destinations.
“The sand beach and other attractions have sparked interest among tourists looking for new experiences. This has resulted in a steady increase in visitor numbers throughout the year,” said Zilongezyo Muzamba, director of BaTonga Villa.
Government efforts to support tourism growth in the district include upgrades to the Binga aerodrome, rehabilitation of the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road, and ongoing work on the Karoi-Binga-Cross Dete road.
These initiatives are aimed at improving access and infrastructure to sustain the growth of the tourism sector.
