AUTHORITIES at Hwange National Park are investigating a suspected poaching incident after three lions were found dead under unclear circumstances this week.
Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority spokesperson Tinashe Farawo told the ZBC News that the carcasses were found by rangers at Hwange National Park Monday morning.
“We are investigating a case of suspected poaching in Hwange National Park, where three lions were killed. Preliminary investigations have shown that it was a case of poaching and maybe for ritual purposes because the suspects removed the heads and the legs of the lions. Our dog unit, the K9 in Hwange National Park, is busy tracking down the suspects.”
The incident adds to the alarming statistics which revealed that 420 animals, including the Big Five, have been killed by poachers since 2019.
The animals which include Elephants, Rhinos, Lions, and Buffalos, are valued at around US$8 million.
