AU Commission chair expresses concern over violence

Story by Josephine Mugiyo in Addis Ababa

AS the African Union summit opens here this Saturday, AU Commission chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat has expressed concern over the continued conflict and violence and the desire to solve differences through guns.

He also bemoaned the toll climate change has taken on the continent, affecting Africa’s most vulnerable population.

He called for action towards solving issues related to climate change and terrorism, noting that Africa can not have a laid-back approach to dealing with such.

Mr Mahamat also drew delegates’ attention to the current war in Palestine, stating that the African Union stands with Palestine and calls for an end to the armed conflict.

Focusing on achievements attained by the AU, the chairperson said that though progressing slowly, the setting up of the African Continental Free Trade Area is taking shape.

He also reiterated the need for African leaders to make bold and courageous decisions for the good of the continent.

The chairperson also said Africa must count on the strength and intellect of its people as it strives for development.

The theme for this year’s summit is: ‘Educate an African Fit for the 21st Century: Building resilient education systems for increased access to inclusive, lifelong, quality, and relevant learning in Africa’.

Zimbabwe has made significant strides in the education sector with deliberate policies that have seen promotion of technology and innovation in the country’s tertiary institutions.
