AFCON triumph crowns decade of planning, continuity and investment

SENEGAL have reaffirmed their status as Africa’s football powerhouse after winning their second Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in three editions, a triumph that reflects years of deliberate investment, strong leadership and clear development pathways.

The AFCON success marks the latest milestone in the rise of the Senegal national football team, whose dominance has been built on structure rather than chance.

Central to that progress has been continuity on the technical bench.
Head coach Pape Thiaw is a product of the same system, having previously served as assistant to the legendary Aliou Cissé.

Cissé spent nine years in charge, guiding Senegal to their historic AFCON 2021 title and laying foundations that continue to shape the team.

Continuity has also extended to the playing squad.

Several members of the 2021 AFCON-winning team remain key figures, including talisman Sadio Mané, captain Kalidou Koulibaly and goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

Their experience has ensured leadership and belief are passed onto emerging talent.

Behind the scenes, Senegal have established clear football pathways linking academies to domestic clubs, national teams and opportunities abroad.
Youth institutions such as Génération Foot, Diambars Institute and Dakar Sacré Coeur combine elite football training with education, ensuring sustainable player development.

These pathways have been strengthened through partnerships with France-based clubs.

Génération Foot’s long-standing link with FC Metz has provided a direct route to Europe, while Dakar Sacré Coeur works closely with Olympique Lyonnais.
Paris Saint-Germain has also established an academy in Senegal, further raising technical standards.

Government support has underpinned the system, with the state working alongside the football federation to fund youth programmes, national teams and infrastructure, making football a strategic priority in Senegal.

That investment is reflected in facilities such as the Stade Abdoulaye Wade, alongside improved training centres across the country.

Senegal’s dominance has also been evident beyond the senior men’s team.
The locally based side won the African Nations Championship in 2022, while the Under-17 and Under-20 teams claimed continental youth titles, underlining the depth of the system.

While the golden generation of Mané, Koulibaly and Mendy is gradually nearing the end of its cycle, the Teranga Lions have already unveiled a new wave of talent, including Mamadou Sarr, Antoine Mendy and El Hadji Malick Diouf.
