Acting President Chiwenga congratulates Kirsty Coventry on historic IOC election

ACTING President General Retired Dr Constantino Chiwenga has congratulated Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Minister Honourable Kirsty Coventry after she was elected president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) this Thursday.

In his congratulatory message, Acting President Chiwenga said her triumph is not just a personal one, but a moment of immense pride for the nation.

Dr Chiwenga further noted that her journey as a talented swimmer to becoming the first woman and first African to be elected IOC President exemplifies a spirit of determination and excellence that Zimbabwe is known for.

The Acting President Chiwenga said he is confident that as IOC President, Coventry will advocate for the growth of sport worldwide, fostering inclusivity and excellence in every discipline.

Meanwhile, several sporting bodies have also sent in their congratulatory messages to Minister Coventry.

Zimbabwe Olympic Committee (ZOC), posted on their X social media that they are proud and they support Coventry as she leads the IOC into a new era, and that she embodies excellence & pride for Africa, Zimbabwe & women.

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) President Nqobile Magwizi, has said this a time to be proud for Zimbabwe and Africa in celebrating Kirsty Coventry’s election as IOC President.

“It is a moment of immense pride for Zimbabwe and Africa. Her unwavering dedication, leadership, and passion for sport have inspired generations, and we have no doubt she will steer the Olympic movement to even greater heights. This is a victory for Zimbabwean sport and a beacon of hope for young athletes across the continent. The whole nation celebrates with you,” Magwizi said.

Highlanders football club (bosso), also posted on their X page that they are happy and proud of Kirsty Coventry on her groundbreaking election as President of the International Olympic Committee, which is a remarkable achievement marks and a historic milestone, as she becomes the first woman and first African President to lead the IOC.

Minister Coventry will officially assume office on June 24, succeeding Thomas Bach as her election marks a significant milestone in global sports leadership, with expectations high for her tenure in shaping the future of the Olympic Movement.

The Zimbabwe Olympic Committee (ZOC) expressed immense pride and support for Coventry, highlighting her role in leading the IOC into a new era. ZOC praised her as a symbol of excellence and pride for both Africa and Zimbabwe, as well as for women worldwide.
