Brake failure suspected in Ruti Dam commuter omnibus tragedy

Story by ZBC Reporter

NINE people are feared dead after a commuter omnibus travelling from Gutu to Murambinda for a church service plunged into Ruti Dam in Buhera early Friday morning.

It is understood the driver had stopped on the Ruti Dam wall to load luggage when the vehicle is believed to have suffered brake failure before rolling into the dam.

National Police Spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident, saying investigations are underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

According to Ward 19 Councillor Taurai Matiza, community members assisted in retrieving the bodies of the deceased from the dam. The bodies are yet to be taken to nearby mortuaries.

The tragedy comes just weeks after four members of the same family drowned when a canoe capsized while crossing Ruti Dam.
