THE Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) has presented newly printed Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) banknotes to President Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa, as the central bank prepares to introduce upgraded notes into circulation.
The new banknotes have been produced as part of efforts to improve the quality and durability of the ZiG currency. They will circulate alongside the existing notes already in use.
The upgraded series includes 50 ZiG, 100 ZiG and 200 ZiG denominations, while the Reserve Bank says dates for the release of the higher denominations into circulation will be announced in due course.
RBZ Governor Dr John Mushayavanhu presented the first printed notes of each denomination to President Mnangagwa before the official rollout.
“For the year 2025, we were printing the new Big Five ZiG note series. We have managed to print all the denominations, the 10, the 20, the 50, the 100 and the 200. Today, we presented to His Excellency the President the first note of each denomination that was printed; 0001 for the 10 ZiG, 0001 for the 20 ZiG, 0001 for the 50 ZiG, up to the 200 ZiG. The 10, 20 and 50 are already in circulation. For the 100 and 200, we will advise in due course,” he said.
The presentation followed President Mnangagwa’s inspection of the Reserve Bank’s currency vault, where the newly printed ZiG banknotes are being stored ahead of their release.
Economists say the local currency has continued to strengthen against the United States dollar, with expectations that the trend will be sustained as the central bank maintains a tight monetary policy stance aimed at preserving macroeconomic stability.
