TEAM Zimbabwe has received a morale boost at the ongoing Confederation of Universities and Colleges Sports Association (CUCSA) Games in Gaborone after Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Botswana, Henry Mukonoweshuro, pledged the embassy’s support and urged the delegation to perform to the best of their ability.

The ambassador welcomed the athletes and officials to the Zimbabwean Embassy in Gaborone, describing Botswana as their “home away from home” and assuring them of his support throughout the competition.

“Welcome to your home away from home. We are happy to welcome you to Botswana, and we hope you will have a nice stay. We will continue to support you and attend your games on Friday and Saturday.”

Head of delegation Tumirai Magunda said Team Zimbabwe is aiming to improve on its previous performance at the regional competition.

“Your Excellency, we are a group made up of students from tertiary institutions, 230 to be specific. From the look of things, we are going to improve on our third-place finish from last time.”

The Zimbabwe tertiary sport executive later presented a token of appreciation to Ambassador Mukonoweshuro.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe’s medal campaign gathered momentum, with both the men’s and women’s football teams advancing to the semi-finals. The men’s side secured progression after a 1-1 draw against Malawi, while the women’s team booked their place in the last four with a 2-0 victory over Lesotho.

In table tennis, Team Zimbabwe added four silver and three bronze medals to its tally as the competition continues in Botswana.
