Zimbabwe eye Davis Cup resurgence after Zone Four relegation

ZIMBABWE’S Davis Cup team will be aiming for an immediate return to Africa Zone Three when it competes in the Africa Zone Four tournament in Kenya later this month.

The campaign presents an opportunity for redemption after Zimbabwe suffered relegation last year, having finished bottom of its pool during a tournament held in Harare.

Led by Courtney Lock, the national team heads into the competition determined to regain its place among the continent’s stronger tennis nations.

Roman Mtisi, Zamani Moyo, Sean Taruberekera and Makanaka Hwata complete the squad, while Gwinyai Tongoona will serve as non-playing captain.

Zimbabwe faces stiff competition from Algeria, Angola, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Mozambique and hosts Kenya in the battle for promotion.

The eight participating nations will be divided into two groups of four, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the play-offs.

Only the play-off winners will secure promotion to Africa Zone Three, making every match crucial in Zimbabwe’s bid to bounce back at the first attempt.

The tournament marks a significant moment for a nation with a proud Davis Cup history.

At its peak, Zimbabwe competed in the elite World Group, rubbing shoulders with some of the sport’s biggest names. During that era, tennis legends such as Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi faced Zimbabwean teams led by the renowned Byron Black and Wayne Black.

With promotion at stake, Zimbabwe will be looking to draw inspiration from that rich legacy as it seeks to take a significant step towards restoring its standing in African tennis.
