ZIMBABWE’S Under-20 handball team has shifted focus to the continental stage, beginning preparations for the African Championships set for September in Côte d’Ivoire.
Fresh from a commanding run at regional level, the youthful side heads into the tournament with renewed confidence, aiming to convert Zone Six dominance into a stronger showing against Africa’s top teams.
Zimbabwe secured qualification after clinching a third consecutive Zone Six title, cementing their growing authority in the region and earning a return to the continental stage following appearances in 2022 and 2024.
Zimbabwe Handball Federation Technical Director Bekezela Ncube said preparations are now the priority.
“We are pleased with the team’s performance at the IHF Zone Six tournament, where the Under-20 side emerged champions for the third successive time. Our Under-18 team also performed well, narrowly losing to Zambia to settle for silver. We are now preparing for the continental championships in Côte d’Ivoire in September,” he said.
Ncube stressed the need for early, structured planning to enhance competitiveness at the highest level.
“Our plan is to begin preparations early and maintain team continuity. With adequate preparation, we are confident of improving our results. We are also preparing for upcoming competitions for the Under-18 and Under-20 women’s teams, while the senior women’s team is set to compete later this year,” he added.
Zimbabwe’s resurgence in handball was evident at the recent Zone Six tournament, where the Under-20 side claimed a third straight title, while the Under-18 team finished as runners-up.
