Zimbabwe expands social protection for liberation struggle veterans

THE Government has intensified efforts to improve the welfare of Zimbabwe’s liberation war veterans through expanded pensions, medical assistance, education support and decentralised service delivery.
The measures are part of a broader strategy to ensure veterans of the liberation struggle and their dependants receive the support and recognition due to them for their contribution to the country’s independence.
Liberation war veterans in Bulawayo have welcomed the renewed commitment, particularly the focus on settling outstanding payments, improving access to medical care and strengthening social protection.
Veterans said the interventions would significantly improve their quality of life and help address long-standing welfare concerns.
Minister of Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Affairs, Senator Monicah Mavhunga said Government remains firmly committed to supporting veterans through a range of targeted programmes.
“War victims are entitled to disability pensions determined by the degree of disability or injury. They are also entitled to assistive devices such as artificial limbs, clothing allowances and medical expenses related to declared and accepted injuries,” she said.
She added that the Government is also prioritising empowerment initiatives aimed at strengthening veterans’ economic independence and improving household livelihoods.
On June 6, 2025, President Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa launched a series of empowerment schemes designed to support income-generating projects within the veterans’ community.
These initiatives are intended to provide sustainable livelihoods and enhance financial security for veterans and their families.
Education support has also emerged as a key component of the programme, with assistance being extended to the children and dependants of liberation war veterans.
The Government says it will continue engaging veterans across the country to ensure inclusive service delivery and equitable access to benefits.
This commitment was further demonstrated during the 46th Independence Day celebrations in Maphisa, where President Mnangagwa handed over houses built under the Presidential War Veterans Housing Scheme.
The housing initiative is part of a wider effort to improve living conditions for veterans while recognising their enduring contribution to Zimbabwe’s liberation and nation-building.
Through enhanced welfare support, empowerment programmes and improved access to essential services, Government is reaffirming its commitment to honouring and uplifting the country’s liberation war veterans.
