THE refurbishment of Mpilo Central Hospital is progressing steadily, with Government describing the project as a key pillar of its healthcare modernisation drive under the National Development Strategy Two (NDS2).

The large-scale renovation project, which began last year, is aimed at transforming one of Zimbabwe’s largest referral hospitals into a modern healthcare institution capable of meeting growing demand.

Minister of State for Bulawayo Province Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Judith Ncube said the project reflects Government’s commitment to strengthening health infrastructure as part of its broader development agenda.

“We are in the early stages of our transition to NDS2. This strategy speaks to the connection between human capital and prosperity. It is imperative to develop strong infrastructure in the health sector. For more than half a century, the hospital has stood as a major referral institution in the southern and western regions of the country,” she said.

Significant progress has already been made, particularly in the hospital’s general wards, where renovation works are now nearing completion.

Acting Chief Medical Officer, Professor Solwayo Ngwenya said the transformation will significantly enhance service delivery.

“This transformation will help improve patient care, and it is in line with Vision 2030,” he said.

The project is being implemented by Prevail Group of Companies in three phases.

Chief Executive Officer Ms Tendai Sithole said the first phase is now almost complete.

“We are implementing this project in three phases. The first phase of the project is almost complete,” she said.

Once complete, the refurbishment is expected to give Mpilo Central Hospital a modern outlook while significantly improving the quality, efficiency and accessibility of healthcare services for patients across southern and western Zimbabwe.
