BRIAN Bennett’s unbeaten 97 went in vain as Zimbabwe were defeated by India by 72 runs in their second Super Eight match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup this Thursday.
Chasing a challenging 257 for victory, the Chevrons reached 184 for six, with Bennett producing a composed innings that underscored his growing reliability at the top of the order. The 22-year-old opener struck his third half-century of the tournament and registered his 12th T20 fifty, highlighting his consistency amid a struggling batting line-up.
Zimbabwe’s bowlers struggled to contain India’s aggressive batting, conceding heavily in crucial phases of the innings. The inability to restrict key partnerships left the Chevrons with an unmanageable target.
Despite the defeat, Bennett’s innings offered a silver lining for Zimbabwe, who now turn their focus to their final Super Eight match against South Africa on Sunday. While the loss eliminates them from semi-final contention, the team will aim to end their campaign on a positive note.
India, defending champions, revitalised their campaign with the win and will face the West Indies in their concluding Super Eight fixture.
