Story by Lawrence Trusida
ZIMBABWE’S unbeaten march into the Super Eight stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup has been powered by the calm brilliance of 22-year-old opener Brian Bennett.
Still undismissed in the tournament, Bennett has provided the stability at the top of the order that has underpinned the Chevrons’ historic qualification. Three matches in, he remains unbeaten, with two half-centuries to his name and not a hint of panic.
In a campaign that has seen Zimbabwe reach the Super Eight stage for the first time and do so undefeated, Bennett has emerged as the understated heartbeat of the side, laying the foundations while others apply the finishing touches.
For years, Zimbabwe searched for stability at the top of the order. Talent arrived in flashes, promise flickered and permanence proved elusive. Bennett has altered that rhythm. There is now a sense of order where there was once uncertainty.
His presence has slowed the tempo, afforded the middle order breathing space and allowed the Chevrons to construct innings rather than chase them in haste.
What stands out is not merely the weight of runs, but the manner of their accumulation. His strike rotation is precise and his shot selection mature beyond his years. He absorbs pressure quietly, remaining at the crease long enough for plans to settle and confidence to spread.
In a format often defined by speed, Bennett’s value lies in control.
He is no stranger to the big stage. Bennett already boasts a Test century at Lord’s Cricket Ground — the spiritual home of cricket as well as an ODI hundred. Those milestones hinted at a player equipped for the highest level; this World Cup campaign has confirmed it.
As Zimbabwe advance to the Super Eight, the challenge intensifies and the margins narrow. The fairytale continues, and Bennett’s ability to anchor the innings, accelerate when required and remain unbeaten will be pivotal if the dream is to endure against the game’s elite.
The Chevrons have since shifted base to India for their Super Eight campaign and will open with a clash against West Indies cricket team on Monday, before facing hosts India national cricket team and South Africa national cricket team later in the week.
