BULAWAYO giants Highlanders F.C. are signaling a resurgence under new head coach Benjani Mwaruwari after lifting the Jairos Jiri Charity Cup with a morale-boosting victory over arch-rivals Dynamos F.C.
The win, secured in a fiercely contested clash between the country’s two most decorated sides, marked a statement start for Mwaruwari’s tenure and earned immediate backing from the Bosso faithful.
“We are happy that Benjani has proven he is a man on a mission. What we want is to give him support so that we declare Barbourfields a no-go area for visiting teams,” supporters said.
Fans expressed optimism about the squad’s balance, citing a blend of youth and experience and renewed belief within the dressing room.
“By beating Dynamos, Benjani has proved he is on a mission to restore lost pride. We want the team to return to its glory days,” they added.
For Mwaruwari, affectionately known as “The Undertaker”, the appointment represents a homecoming. A product of the club’s junior ranks and former Warriors captain, he has long spoken of his ambition to lead the side.
“Coaching Highlanders has always been my dream since I came through the juniors. These opportunities do not come easy. When you get one, you must grab it with both hands and make the fans happy,” he said.
Highlanders have endured a prolonged trophy drought despite experimenting with various technical setups, including foreign coaches, with limited success.
The current technical team, featuring assistant coach Mkhokeli Dube and team manager Zenzo Moyo, both with deep Bosso roots is viewed by supporters as a potential formula for restoring the club’s competitive edge.
With silverware already secured in pre-season and renewed belief sweeping through Barbourfields, Highlanders appear poised for an intriguing chapter under one of their own.
