Controlled dam water releases begin in Masvingo amid heavy rains

THE Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) has begun the controlled release of water from Lake Mutirikwi and Manjirenji Dam in Masvingo Province after both reservoirs reached full supply levels amid the ongoing rainy season.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, ZINWA said the releases are being carried out in line with standard dam safety and water management protocols, aimed at safeguarding the structural integrity of the two major water bodies.

“ZINWA wishes to inform stakeholders and communities downstream of Lake Mutirikwi and Manjirenji Dam that the dams have reached full supply level and, in line with standard dam safety and water management procedures, controlled release of water is now underway. This is being done to maintain the structural integrity of the dams and ensure their safe operations. As a result, water levels in downstream areas are expected to rise, which may lead to an increased possibility of flooding,” reads the statement.

Communities living downstream of the two dams have been urged to remain on high alert and take precautionary measures.

“In view of the above, downstream communities are strongly advised to, among other things, avoid riverbanks and high flood areas, refrain from crossing flooded rivers, move livestock, equipment, and valuables away from low-lying areas,” the statement also reads.

The authority said it is working closely with emergency and disaster risk management agencies to closely monitor the situation and minimise potential risks to life and property.

The development comes as several parts of the country continue to experience above-average rainfall, prompting authorities to intensify flood preparedness and early warning efforts.
