Bulawayo Arts Awards celebrate excellence amidst fierce competition

BULAWAYO’s creative industry took centre stage on Saturday night as artists, journalists and cultural influencers converged for the Bulawayo Arts Awards, an annual showcase that highlighted both the depth of local talent and the growing competitiveness of the city’s arts sector.

As the ceremony progressed, the spotlight shifted to the Song of the Year category, where one standout track emerged after dominating radio airplay, dance floors and community events throughout the year.

“It is an honour to receive this award on behalf of my brother Jaycee with his song “Ungayithi Vuu so thulanini lingakhulumi,” Song of the Year winner, Rose Musekiwa said.

“I am grateful to be recognised as the ambassador here in the BAA awards in Bulawayo, South Africa, Australia and other countries. It shows that people recognise my work and efforts,” Outstanding Ambassador Winner, Everton Mlalazi said.

The People’s Choice award echoed even louder when DJ Mazoe walked out with a hybrid Toyota Aqua vehicle.

It was an award driven purely by public votes and a category where popularity and connection mattered more than anything else.

“The fans showed up and voted, and I would like to thank them for this Award. This moment proves that the people’s voice is powerful,” DJ Mazoe said.

Away from the music stage, a different contest captured the spotlight, as journalists faced off.

Three male journalists from Zimpapers went head-to-head with ZBC’s Lisa Masuku Kurira for the Best Arts Journalist award across all media.

“This award is not only mine but for the entire ZBC team, and l would like to thank them for granting me the opportunity to learn and be able to showcase my talent and skill, and l would also want to thank God, my family and especially my husband for the unwavering support through all the time,” she said.

“I would like to thank all those who partnered with us in organising this event. This is our 8th edition, and we are preparing for the 9th edition, and we will soon reach our 10th edition. We are grateful for the success of the BAA awards,” Bulawayo Arts Award Organiser, Kudakwashe Takundwa said.

As the ceremony continued under the bright ZITF lights, the Bulawayo Arts Awards once again proved to be more than just about trophies; it is about the celebration of creativity, influence and the storytellers shaping Zimbabwe’s cultural identity.
