HIGH Court Justice Pisirayi Kwenda has handed down custodial sentences to Harare businessmen Moses Mpofu and Mike Chimombe, following their conviction in October for defrauding the State of more than US$7 million under the Presidential Goat Pass-On Scheme.

Mpofu was sentenced to 22 years imprisonment, with three years suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour. An additional four years were suspended on condition of restitution, leaving him to serve an effective 15-year jail term.

Chimombe received a 17-year sentence, with three years suspended on condition of good behaviour and two years suspended on condition of restitution, resulting in an effective 12-year term behind bars.

The pair, who were found guilty of abusing public funds meant to support vulnerable households, have filed notices to appeal both conviction and sentence.
