ZIMBABWE and Iran are set to convene a Mid-Term Review of their Joint Commission, aimed at strengthening existing cooperation and identifying new areas of mutual benefit.

The development was confirmed by the Iranian Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Hossein Hosseini, following his meeting with Vice President General (Rtd) Dr Constantino Chiwenga in Harare on Wednesday.

The engagement reinforced both countries’ commitment to enhancing collaboration across key economic sectors, while also broadening the scope for future partnerships.

Ambassador Hosseini said discussions included ongoing cooperation in pharmaceutical production, as well as proposed new initiatives in health and tourism.

“I raised certain issues that have already been in our bilateral agenda, including our cooperation in pharmaceutical production lines in Zimbabwe. I also raised a new issue, which is the promotion of cooperation in the field of health tourism. It was warmly welcomed by the Vice President, and we are supposed to discuss all the previous and new areas of bilateral cooperation in the coming session of the mid-term review process of our joint commission in Tehran during the next week.”

Zimbabwe and Iran share strong economic cooperation with agreements in energy, agriculture, pharmaceuticals and telecommunications as well as research, science and technology.

“We also discussed our high-level political area, including the visit of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, and the visit of our first Vice President, Dr Mohammad Reza Aref, to Zimbabwe. I think our path is clear, and we can move straight forward in a progressive direction.”

Zimbabwe will also be looking at maximising linkages created during the Iran Africa Economic Conference held in April this year, which was also attended by Vice President Chiwenga.

The two nations’ focus on enhanced cooperation is targeted towards mutual economic advancement.
