THE ZANU PF-led government continues to prioritise access to clean water and the promotion of community nutrition gardens through the establishment and rehabilitation of boreholes in rural areas, with 60 boreholes revitalised in Chivi North.
While the government is rolling out solar-powered boreholes for irrigation projects, the rehabilitation of bush pump boreholes remains a key focus to enhance access to safe water in communities.
In Chivi North Constituency, including Makholiso Village under Chief Madamombe, more than 60 boreholes that had been out of operation for years have now been restored. The development, achieved through a government partnership with the Tzu Chi Foundation, has brought much-needed relief to local villagers.
“These boreholes broke down years ago, and we struggled to access clean water. We had to rely on shallow wells or walk long distances. We are happy they have been rehabilitated, and we can now start small horticultural gardens,” said beneficiary Edison Chitambira.
Another beneficiary, Ms Evelyn Gwatinetsa, added, “We are grateful that government continues to bring partners who support development. Tzu Chi Zimbabwe has assisted us to ensure we access clean and safe water.”
Chivi North legislator, Honourable Godfrey Mukungunugwa, urged communities to embrace government empowerment initiatives aimed at transforming livelihoods.
“Our President, Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa, continues to strengthen relations with other nations, and these partnerships are bearing fruit. Today we celebrate the rehabilitation of 60 boreholes, alongside the establishment of village business units and irrigation schemes such as Bwanya, which have transformed Chivi from a dry area to a productive zone,” he said.
The Tzu Chi Foundation reaffirmed its commitment to supporting vulnerable communities.
“As an organisation, we continue working with communities across Zimbabwe. This is not our first time in Chivi. Besides rehabilitating boreholes, we also distributed food items to households under Chief Madamombe today,” said Tzu Chi Zimbabwe representative, Ms Jean Mutekure.
The borehole sinking and rehabilitation programme remains a central pillar of the government’s rural development agenda, ensuring water security and supporting sustainable community projects.
