VICE President General (Rtd) Dr Constantino Chiwenga has commended the revitalisation of Hwange Colliery Company Limited, describing the turnaround of the country’s oldest coal producer as a key milestone in Zimbabwe’s industrial transformation.

During a tour of mining projects in Hwange on Tuesday, Vice President Chiwenga witnessed first-hand the progress made in reviving the company’s operations, including the refurbishment of the coke oven battery a critical component of the firm’s value-addition chain.

At the now fired-up coke oven battery, the company’s Administrator, Mr Munashe Shava, who has overseen its revival, committed to working in the interests of the shareholders.

“This project of resuscitating the battery was essential in the value chain of the mine, we realise that we are not just a mine that can mine and sell raw coal, but must do value addition,” he said.

“I am happy to see Hwange Colliery back on its feet. Many had almost lost hope about its revival, but the speed and progress we have witnessed is remarkable. We now want to see the quick implementation of various strategies and ideas. This refurbished coke oven, which at one point could have cost up to US$50 million, was completed for just US$7.5 million. This reflects strategic thinking and strong leadership,” the Vice President said.

The mining sector continues to contribute immensely to Zimbabwe’s gross domestic product.

For its abundant coal, the country has now further diversified into other valuable by-products and enterprises like gas, coking coal and several thermal power stations.
