Mashonaland West targets higher yields during summer cropping season

PREPARATIONS for the summer cropping season are in full swing with Mashonaland West Province setting sights on increasing production of strategic crops.

With agriculture anchoring the Zimbabwean economy, the province is targeting to boost production of maize, wheat, millet and tobacco during the season.

Stakeholders met in Chinhoyi this Wednesday to map the way forward.

“For the coming season, emphasis is on increased productivity, that is production per unit area. A cereal production target of 688 288MT (648 000MT maize and 40288MT traditional grains) will surpass the food and feed requirements for Mash West. Good agronomic practices remain the foundation for sustainable yields. We are training farmers on soil fertility, correct seed varieties, and pest management to ensure maximum output,” Ms Siyena Makaza said.

The Agricultural and Rural Development Authority (ARDA) is targeting to contribute at least 300 000 metric tonnes towards the provincial targets of over 600 000 metric tonnes.

“Our mandate is to make sure we anchor production from the household level. We are rolling out irrigation and mechanisation so that this province delivers on its targets. Key towards this target is to also ensure that we distribute inputs on time so that our farmers will not be found wanting when it is planting time,” ARDA’s Acting Director, Mr Forbes Maodzwa noted.

The government emphasised the need for farmers to utilise irrigation equipment to enhance productivity.

“We are calling for accelerated mechanisation and maximum use of irrigation facilities so that we cushion our farmers against the effects of climate change and secure food security for the province and the nation,” Mashonaland West Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Marian Chombo said.

The country is expected to receive normal to above normal rainfall during the summer cropping season, although less rain is expected in the first half of the season.
