ZIMBABWE’S World Cup dream is over after going down 1-0 to Benin in a 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifier played in Abidjan, Cote D’Ivoire this Friday evening.
From the onset, it was an impossible task, Zimbabwe were hoping to pick up their first win in the campaign and hoped other results go their way to still entertain any chances of qualification.
That all did not go their way, Zimbabwe failed to win, while other results were not also in their favour.
Augsburg forward Steve Mounie scored the goal that sunk the Warriors in the 77th minute.
The defeat was the third for the Warriors in the current campaign on top of the four draws they have managed so far, to leave them anchoring the log on four points from seven matches.
Benin moved into second position with 11 points, five behind South Africa who are almost there after thumping Lesotho 3-nil this Friday.
This placed Nigeria in a clash with fourth-placed Rwanda this Saturday with either side hopeful of a win and put pressure on Benin for the best placed runner up slot.
Zimbabwe now travel to South Africa for a date against Rwanda this Tuesday.
