HIGHLANDERS came from behind to earn a hard-fought 1-1 draw against FC Platinum in an entertaining Castle Lager Premier Soccer League encounter at Mandava Stadium this Saturday.
FC Platinum made a bright start, with debutant Isaskar Gurirab creating several early chances before setting up Oscar Bhebhe, who gave the hosts the lead in the 15th minute.
Highlanders responded positively and were rewarded 10 minutes later when Kudakwashe Mahachi won a penalty after being fouled inside the area.
Nigerian forward Benjamin Adeogun calmly converted from the spot, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to register his fifth league goal of the season and level the scores.
Highlanders coach Benjani Mwaruwari admitted his side still has defensive shortcomings but was satisfied with the point.
“There are some departments that are lacking because now we are scoring, but we are also conceding, which is worrisome. However, I’m happy with the draw,” he said.
FC Platinum coach Joel Luphahla expressed disappointment at failing to capitalise on home advantage despite encouraging performances from his new signings.
“This is disappointing because we were playing at home and could have easily taken the game, but they got the better of us. A point is disappointing for us as a club, but our new boys really gave us a good show. Once they gel up, they will do better,” he said.
Elsewhere, the top-of-the-table clash between CAPS United and Ngezi Platinum Stars ended goalless at Rufaro Stadium, leaving Makepekepe without a win in six successive league matches.
Simba Bhora defeated Bulawayo Chiefs 2-0 at Wadzanai Stadium, Chicken Inn overcame Manica Diamonds 2-1 at Barbourfields, while FC Hunters earned a 1-1 draw away to ZPC Kariba.
The action continues on Sunday, with Dynamos visiting MWOS at Ngoni Stadium, Herentals hosting Hardrock at Rufaro Stadium, while Agama take on Triangle United in a crucial relegation battle at Wadzanai Stadium.
