HURUNGWE Rural District Council Chief Executive Officer, Luke Kalavina, has been convicted of three counts of fraud by the High Court and sentenced to 34 years in prison.
In a statement released by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission, Kalavina was found guilty of defrauding the council of public funds meant for critical infrastructure projects, including the construction of a bridge and the upgrading of a clinic in Karoi.
According to ZACC, Kalavina diverted large sums of money for personal use and, in the process, compromised service delivery.
Kalavina’s sentencing comes after the jailing of two other Hurungwe RDC officials and their accomplice for fraud involving more than US$18 000 that was meant for the construction of a bridge.
Council Engineer Romeo Mupamaonde, his assistant, Alfred Makama, and a contractor, Batsirayi Nyamayaro, were sentenced to an effective 15 years in prison each by the High Court after a full trial.
