FOLLOWING Zimbabwe’s 4×400m relay team’s stellar performance in Botswana this past week, the team is carrying the nation’s hopes at the World Athletics Relay in Guangzhou, China.
The relays, which are scheduled for May 10 to May 11 will see the team comprising Leeford Zuze, Gerren Muwishi, Aldrin Mafa and Dennis Hove carrying the national flag.
The team, made of locally-based sprinters, has impressed the coaches who are confident of beating the national record of three minutes 00.79 seconds set in 1997.
“I was impressed by the team’s performance at the Lefika International Relays in Botswana. They have worked hard and it is quite impressive looking at the individual split time that they performed. The other issue is that they are a team made of locally-based athletes and have made it to the world stage,” National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe director of coaching, talent identification and development, Phakamile Lismati said.
Zimbabwe’s last participation at the World Athletics Relays was in 2019 with the men’s 4x100m team.
