A manhunt has been launched for two inmates who escaped from Mutimurefu Prison in Masvingo this Wednesday.
The escapees have been identified as Feliciano Simango, also known as Fidelis Jorum Mauyangwe, and Never Matoma.
Zimbabwe Prison and Correctional Service(ZPCS) National Spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Meya Khanyezi confirmed the incident, stating that the escape occurred during a supervised work assignment outside the prison facility.
The inmates reportedly took advantage of the situation to unlawfully gain access to a ZPCS vehicle, which they used to flee.
However, they were involved in an accident about 2.5 kilometres from the worksite, leading them to abandon the vehicle and flee on foot.
Assistant Commissioner Khanyezi added that Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and security has been reinforced to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Authorities are calling on members of the public to remain vigilant and report any sightings or information that may assist in locating the escapees.
