PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has commissioned a Tram- Urban Mass Transportation Research Centre at the Harare Institute of Technology (HIT).

Zimbabwe’s Education 5.0 model and the National Development Strategy One have received yet another boost of confidence after the President commissioned a system that is expected to complement the country’s mass transportation system.

After taking a ride on City Rail Munhanzva and touring exhibition stands at the Harare Institute of Technology on the side-lines of the institution’s graduation ceremony this Friday, President Mnangagwa said the project speaks to the aspirations of the Second Republic’s home-grown solutions to challenges.

“I am impressed with what I saw today. It speaks to our vision as a government and what the education 5.0 model can do in finding home grown solutions to not only the transport situation in the country, but other challenges as well therefore driving the country forward.”

The HIT Vice Chancellor Professor Quinton Kanhukamwe says his institution hopes to set up a manufacturing plant for the mobile tram and railway system within a period of 12 months.

The design, fabrication and all the components of the tram were done by local scientists, engineers and technicians of the Harare Institute of Technology, a testament of the rich abilities of the graduates produced by local universities.
