Story by Grace Sibanda
The late ZIPRA Deputy Chief of Training, Cde Jack Mpofu has been declared a National Hero.
Comrade Mpofu died last Saturday from a suspected asthma attack at the age of 82.
The message on the National Hero status conferment was relayed to the family by ZANU PF Secretary General, Dr Obert Mpofu through a confirmation letter read out by the ruling party’s Bulawayo provincial chairperson, Cde Jabulani Sibanda.
“I hereby declare Comrade Jack Mpofu a National Hero in recognition of his contribution to the liberation of the country. His contribution will be etched in the history of this country.”
Dr Obert Mpofu reiterated that the late Jack Mpofu was indeed a stalwart of the liberation struggle, whose contribution to the country’s liberation is not questionable.
“When we heard the news of the passing of Jack Mpofu and an application for hero status, we did not think twice because he was a man of good repute who is deserving of this honour.”
Mourners are gathered at house number 14929 Cowdray Park in Bulawayo.
He is survived by his wife Hirrely Dube and three children.
Burial arrangements are yet to be announced.
