THE Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) has confirmed the escape of a Class B inmate, Jeffrey Jingura, from Harare Central Prison.
According to ZPCS, the inmate escaped on December 20, 2025, using a motor vehicle that he had been repairing at the Harare Central Prison Workshop.
He was convicted of theft.
ZPCS National Public Relations Officer, Assistant Commissioner Meya Khanyezi has assured the nation that investigations are currently underway to determine the circumstances surrounding this incident and noted that the matter has been reported to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP).
“ZPCS remains committed to maintaining a secure correctional environment and to the rehabilitation of inmates. While incidents of this nature are regrettable, they are rare, and we continue to strengthen our security measures to prevent such occurrences in the future,” Assistant Commissioner Khanyezi said.
She urged the public to assist with information.
“We call on the public to remain vigilant and to report any information that may assist in the recapture of the inmate. Rest assured, we are working tirelessly to resolve this matter and to uphold the safety and security of our communities. Members of the public are advised to exercise caution and vigilance. Do not approach the individual if sighted. Instead, please immediately contact the nearest police station or the ZPCS emergency line on 0242 706501,” she said.
In March this year, another inmate, Luke Zinyengerere, staged a dramatic escape from the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) officers at the Harare Magistrate’s court.
In a scene reminiscent of a movie, Zinyengerere pointed a gun at the officers escorting prisoners to their transport van, hijacking another motorist’s vehicle, and speeding away.
He was, however, recaptured and sentenced to 22 years in prison for escaping from lawful custody and carjacking.
