ZOU advances education 5.0 agenda with focus on AI

GWERU-THE Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU) continues to make significant progress in the implementation of the Education 5.0 model, with the institution now leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to remain aligned with modern educational trends and national development priorities.

As part of efforts to transform higher and tertiary education into a driver of innovation, research, and industrialisation, ZOU has taken a proactive approach in tailoring its programmes to meet the evolving needs of communities, particularly in rural areas.

Speaking during a recent event, ZOU Midlands Regional Director, Professor Remigios Mangizvo, outlined how the institution has operationalised the Education 5.0 philosophy through practical community engagement and applied research.

“The Education 5.0 model comes in various modes. We have made deliberate efforts to be relevant to the model’s requirements through community involvement and solution-driven research. Many of our students are working directly with rural communities to address real-life problems,” he said.

He further highlighted the role of innovation at ZOU, citing a student-developed mobile application, Fambayi, which connects travellers to local tourism destinations, as an example of how the university is incorporating artificial intelligence into its learning and research platforms.

The institution’s initiatives have drawn praise from government officials, with Midlands Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Owen Ncube, commending ZOU for aligning itself with the development objectives of the Second Republic.

“Since its inception in November 2017, the Second Republic under the stewardship of President Mnangagwa, adopted bold and strategic policy decisions to transform the educational system through the Education 5.0 philosophy. I wish to applaud ZOU Midlands Campus for strategically positioning itself towards conversion of ideas into tangible goods and services that benefit communities and the Midlands Provincial economy as it fully embraced the Education 5.0 model,” said Honourable Ncube.

He also noted the role ZOU students are playing in bolstering productivity across key sectors such as mining, agriculture, tourism, construction, manufacturing, and services, which underpin the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Introduced by the Second Republic, the Education 5.0 philosophy goes beyond teaching and research to include innovation, industrialisation, and community service, with the goal of producing graduates who are creators of employment and solutions, rather than job seekers.
