THE Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) has commissioned a new cohort of specialist officers as it continues to modernise the country’s defence sector by integrating professional expertise into military operations to enhance operational effectiveness and service delivery.
The latest intake of medical doctors, lawyers and a laboratory scientist graduated from the Zimbabwe Military Academy in Gweru this Thursday after completing military orientation and leadership training designed to equip professionals with the skills required to serve in a modern military environment.
Military authorities say the move reflects the growing importance of specialised expertise in addressing contemporary security challenges, which increasingly extend beyond conventional military operations.
Commandant of the Zimbabwe Military Academy, Colonel Chakaitwa Mukunha, said the latest intake comprises 15 medical doctors, three lawyers and one laboratory scientist.
“The latest intake comprises 15 medical doctors, three lawyers and a laboratory scientist who have undergone military orientation and leadership development at the Zimbabwe Military Academy. The contemporary operating environment demands officers who possess both professional competence and military leadership skills. This training programme seeks to bridge that gap,” Commandant Zimbabwe Military Academy, Colonel Chakaitwa Mukunha said.
The incorporation of medical practitioners is expected to bolster military health services, while legal officers will strengthen compliance with military justice systems and international legal obligations.
The integration of specialised skills into the defence sector enhances preparedness, improves service delivery and supports the professionalisation of the armed forces.
“I am aware that the course was demanding, both mentally and physically. Thus, your graduation today marks a milestone in your military career. For the Zimbabwe Military Academy, the day marks another significant achievement. The academy is commended for continuing to produce high-grade professional officers of intellect, character and physical fitness that meet the demands of contemporary trends worldwide.
“In this regard, I would like to commend you, the graduating students, for your resilience, determination and unwavering resolve. The main objective of the Basic Officers course was to provide you with fundamental, basic tenets of military knowledge and skills appropriate for you to serve the ZNA. I know you spent many years in the university,” Commander Zimbabwe National Army, Lieutenant General Asher Walter Tapfumaneyi said.
With security institutions increasingly relying on specialised knowledge to address emerging challenges, the commissioning of these professional officers reflects a broader drive towards building a modern, versatile and highly skilled defence force.
