Zimbabwe’s cricketing woes deepen after winless Tri-Series

THE T20 International Triangular Series hosted by Zimbabwe featuring South Africa and New Zealand, has laid bare the challenges confronting local cricket and served as a clear wake-up call for administrators.

The Zimbabwe senior men’s cricket team has been left with more questions than answers after a disappointing showing in the just-ended T20I Triangular Series.

Despite the advantage of home turf, the Chevrons failed to win any of their four matches, falling short against both South Africa and New Zealand, two sides that treated Zimbabwe as lightweights.

It has been a rocky year for the Chevrons, whose last win came back in May during a Test match against Bangladesh.

Since then, defeats and inconsistent form have plagued the side, triggering frustration among fans.

Social media has become a platform for public outcry, with calls for selection and structural reforms at both domestic and national levels, if Zimbabwe Cricket is to avoid slipping further into obscurity.

The stats tell a sobering story.
Zimbabwe now sits 12th in both the ICC’s Full Member T20I and Test rankings.

In ODIs, the nation is ranked 11th, trailing the likes of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Ireland, nations once seen as minnows but now firmly ahead.

As Zimbabwe grapples with its cricketing decline, the Triangular Series did offer a high level of competitive cricket, capped off by a thrilling final.

New Zealand emerged as champions after edging South Africa by three runs in a nail-biting finale this Saturday, a match that showed the intensity and quality Zimbabwe will need to strive toward.
